Seeding a pasture
31 October 2008
Page One of Two
Winter seeding begins on 200-acres of pasture land under a late afternoon overcast Halloween sky threatening rain. The first 40-acres get a mix of Ryegrass, Clover, and Purple Top Turnips---all things cattle love to eat.
With the seed spreader attached to the tractor, Sean Sexton makes a few final adjustments to get the machine ready for the job ahead.
The label on the spreader warns of possible danger from the rotating paddles, which throw the seed out the back as it pours out from the funnel. Sean calculates the proper mix of seeds per pound per acre.

Guided by the math, Sean begins to mix the seed. Whole bags of the large Ryegrass seeds are used.
